Enuresis is more commonly known as bedwetting or sleep wetting. Enuresis in children has two possible causes, trauma and developmental delay. Enuresis is not an illness, but a condition that that can be treated effectively and permanently at the David Mulhall Centre with a series of drug free non-invasive treatments. To discuss this or any other learning or behavioural problems simple call 020 7223 4321 for an initial consultation.
Facts about Enuresis
Frequent bedwetting in children is common up to the age of six.
Approximately 15 to 20 per cent of all five- and six-year-olds wet the bed and most of them are boys.
Approximately 2 to 3 per cent of children wet the bed up to the age of 14 and 1 per cent at the age of 15 or over.
Most children who wet the bed have done it all their life and in many cases no reason can be found.
Often it is passed on through the family. Bedwetting also happens, or has happened, to a close relative in up to 85 per cent of cases.
It may have a medical or psychological cause such as cystitis, diabetes problems at school, at home, or the divorce of parents.
Nocturnal Enuresis
Enuresis most commonly occurs at night and is therefore known as nocturnal enuresis
There are two types of nocturnal enuresis.
Primary nocturnal enuresis is when a child has never developed complete night-time bladder control.
Secondary nocturnal enuresis is when a child has accidental wetting after having had bladder control for six or more months. This type of Enuresis is often associated with a period of emotional stress such as the birth of a younger sibling, a bereavement or school worries.
Causes of Enuresis - Developmental Delay
Developmental delay can sometimes have ramifications such as enuresis as well as other behavioural and learning problems. Enuresis has also been linked to the following:
-Delayed development of bladder control.
-The effects of internal marital disputes, fear, lack of self confidence and medical problems.
-Inherited aspect - children whose parents used to wet the bed are more likely to do so themselves.
-Constipation.
Many of these can also be linked to the effects of developmental delay. For example the stresses of a divorce can have more effect on a child with developmental delay because he/she is emotionally less mature. A fully developed child is emotionally better equipped to deal with stressful situations and so is les likely to have bouts of enuresis. On a non emotional level a child with developmental delay has dormant reflexes that prevent it from achieving full control of its muscles. A child or adult may learn to retain tension in the lower back during sleep as a way of controlling the bladder, thus leading to lower back problems.
Treating Enuresis
Enuresis is often attributed to various causes. People come to us with a child that has other learning or behavioural problems as well as enuresis. As the other problems are addressed the enuresis often rights itself as a result.
A drug free non-invasive treatment at the David Mulhall Centre can successfully treat and stop Enuresis. The treatment involves natural methods which stimulate dormant reflexes into renewed activity and maturity. In this way the causes of the problem are addressed and not just the symptoms.
