INFORMATION ABOUT DYSLEXIA

DEFINITION OF DYSLEXIA
“ A reading disorder that manifests as difficulty with accurate word recognition, spelling and decoding. It is unrelated to other cognitive abilities, intelligence and provision of reading instruction”
The term ‘dyslexia’ originates from the Greek ‘difficulty with words’. It is a specific reading disorder, characterised by difficulties in the writing, spelling and phonological processing of written language. Dyslexia occurs in both adults and children.

MYTHS AND FACTS ABOUT DYSLEXIA
MYTH: ‘Dyslexia is simply an excuse for stupidity’
FACT : This is a greatest of all misconceptions about dyslexia. Dyslexics are of the same intelligence range as non-dyslexics as dyslexia is separate from IQ. For example, one of the youngest people to achieve a Cambridge University degree, with an IQ of 178, was so severely dyslexic that he could produce only two written words per minute.
However, dyslexia is the most common learning disorder for those in education. If undiagnosed, dyslexia can reduce the reading experience of the sufferer and thus prevent them from realising their academic potential.
MYTH: ‘Dyslexics can’t see properly because dyslexia is known as ‘word blindness’.
FACT: In the dyslexic, vision is normal. However, visual perception is impaired but this applies only to the written word.
MYTH: ‘Dyslexia is just about the eyes’
FACT: There is a predominantly visual aspect to this disorder but it also contains an aural component.

CAUSES OF DYSLEXIA
Dyslexia symptoms occur when development of the visual and phonological (aural) perception has been impaired

VISUAL DYSLEXIA: The dyslexia sufferer may not be efficient at using the
eyes as a pair to focus on the written word, and 'tracking' (when the eye is
able to sweep across a line smoothly) will be jerky. Dyslexia may also cause
a time lag when the eye attempts to rest on a word, known as 'advanced
physiological nystagmus'. This deficit of visual perception is not the whole
story, as subtle inaccuracies of hearing can also contribute to dyslexic
symptoms.
AURAL DYSLEXIA: Though the visual aspect is key, the American field of dyslexia research suggests that up to 60% of dyslexic symptoms are caused by subtle inaccuracies of hearing. Though this figure is possibly excessive, it does illustrate the fact that there is an aural component to dyslexia, and that underdevelopment of phonological perception can impact upon reading and spelling ability.

The body contains complex networks of reflexes which govern both its basic functions and influence more complex tasks such as reading, writing and assembling information. Put simply, when a reflex does not function at optimum capacity then we will have difficulty in performing its designated task.
Deficits of the visual and/or phonological perception cause the following dyslexia symptoms:

Dysphonic spelling errors, e.g. ‘carefully’ becomes ‘calfully’.
Substitution of phenomes, e.g. ‘peg’ becomes ‘pag’
Transposition of letters, e.g. ‘Percy’ becomes ‘Precy’

Help to Beat DYSLEXIA
There is no miracle dyslexia cure , but these problems can be eliminated with time and commitment. With the right treatment, dyslexia can be rectified.
The David Mulhall Centre can identify the underlying source of the condition, and once treated, the benefits remain for life.

DYSLEXIA DIAGNOSIS
Diagnosing dyslexia is the first step towards rectifying it and at the David Mulhall centre we can provide an accurate dyslexia assessment. Although an early diagnosis is beneficial, it is never too late to treat dyslexia symptoms.

DYSLEXIA TREATMENT
The David Mulhall centre treats both children and adults with dyslexia. We address both the visual component of this disorder and offer the highly effective ‘Soundsense’ programme for the aural component. Our centre also offers multi-sensory treatment techniques, for example the ‘Soundsense’ programme can be combined with the brushing technique to achieve the best possible results in each case.

Support to Beat DYSLEXIA
It is important to help the adult or child with dyslexia recover from an initial loss of self esteem. For children, and those in education, this can arise from being unable to master the skills that present-day education is conducted through, that is, reading and writing. We are aware that, in an effort to be supportive, well-meaning parents and teachers all too often then reinforce this sense of failure by sending the child for additional lessons. Our treatments are conducted with this in mind, and an accurate diagnosis and effective treatment programme ensure that stress and dyslexia cease to be synonymous. Once dyslexia is treated the benefits are permanent, which allows each individual to perform at the level of their true abilities.
