WHO CAN WE HELP?
We treat children and adults (anyone over the age of 5) with problems such as;
• Dyslexia
• Dyscalculia (problems with Maths)
• Dyspraxia
• Hearing problems
• ADD/ADHD
• Verbal Dyspraxia
• Hypersensitivity
• Global Developmental Delay
• ‘Suspected’ Asperger’s Syndrome
Fewer than 20% of the children we see have a ‘formal’ diagnosis for learning difficulties; most are brought to us simply on parental instinct. Parents ‘know’ their children better than anyone else and have an innate ability to act intuitively when it comes to finding treatment and deciding what’s best.
Even though they believe their children’s problems merit attention many parents have tried unsuccessfully to get adequate support. Some parents want to avoid a diagnosis. Others have concerns that fall outside the accepted range of learning difficulties or developmental delay and are not sure what to do or where to go.
With boys the problems tend to come to the surface quickly and are unambiguous. For girls the signs are usually much more subtle, which is why it’s always worth checking if you have any nagging doubts. Early on they tend to do well and everything seems on track but in the run up to puberty girls begin to plateau and previously unknown problems emerge. We see nearly twice as many boys as girls. In 2005 the average treatment age for children was seven.
The earlier you treat yourself or your children the easier life will be.
The younger the better but we understand that some of you may not realise how much you are constrained by unrecognised developmental delay until later in life. By the way, this is not your fault. There is no rhyme or reason as to why some are affected and others aren’t.
If you suspect that things are not quite right then ask some questions, even a telephone conversation can help rule things in or out. With children, try not to leave it until they’re older and important academic exams are looming on the horizon, this is when self-esteem is most at risk.
